Analysis of the status quo and influencing factors of cognitive function of empty nesters

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the current status of cognitive function among empty-nest elderly and analyze influencing factors, thereby providing a scientific basis for formulating cognitive impairment intervention measures to improve their quality of life.
Methods: A convenience sampling method was employed to select 194 empty-nest elderly as study subjects in a city in Henan Province. The general information was collected through questionnaires and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was administered.
Results: Among the participants, 34 (17.53%) exhibited cognitive dysfunction. The average total score of cognitive function was (21.23±1.40). Significant differences in cognitive function scores were observed among different age groups, genders, recreational activities, and educational levels (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The detection rate of cognitive impairment among empty-nest elderly in this city is relatively high. Advanced age, infrequent participation in recreational activities, and low educational attainment are identified as risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in empty-nest elderly, warranting focused attention.
